Gene therapy and its possible use in dermatovenereology

Abstract

The (general) term gene therapy represents a number of methods or procedures that can be used for genetic modifications for treatment of individuals with genetic (and potentially nongenetic) disorders. Despite the fact that first clinical experiments with gene therapy took place tens of years ago, gene therapy has a reputation of experimental, clinically negligible treatment modality.

However, this situation is nowadays gradually changing, and in some fields (namely in neurology), gene therapy becomes a real therapeutical approach for selected diagnoses. It can be expected that in following years gene therapy will spread into other disciplines including dermatovenerology, where it could help individuals with severe genodermatoses.

A brief review of methods, their advantages and limitation is provided in this article.
