Abstract

The role of festivities in reinforcing collective identities and representations of the collective experience of the Holocaust is explored. Although the post-1948 Cuzechoslovak political regime did not support the organizing of any public festivities for the Jewish communities, the author documents with several examples that even the semiprivate or completely private festivities played a crucial role in maintaining and revitalizing their minority identity.
