Abstract
The phenomenon of the "walk" is an expression of the changing relationship to nature that the emancipated burghers adopted in the last two decades of the 18th century, following the example of the upper classes. The walk is a new cultural and social practice, an expression of the burghers' self-awareness, a form of self-presentation, a way of filling their free time.
Both the German term Spaziergang and the Czech term procházka denote not only physical activity but also a place for walking. The author traces the founding, development and specifics of the first Prague Spaziergänge until about 1840.
