Kings of the Sun : Studies

Abstract

The volume for the exhibition Kings of the Sun collects new studies written by leading Czech and foreign Egyptologists thoroughly presenting Abusir, the site which has been studied by the Czech (formerly Czechoslovak) Institute of Egyptology, Faculty of Arts, Charles University for six decades. Abusir was a part of the pyramid necropoleis of the kings of the Old Kingdom.

Especially during the Fifth Dynasty, the dynasty of "sun kings", it was the most important cemetery of the ancient Egyptian state. In three sections, the rediscovery of the Abusir site and its development is gradually presented reflecting the history of ancient Egypt.

The last and most extensive part of the publication deals with the archaeology of Abusir, associated with local deities, sites, ranging from kings to members of the royal family, especially important princesses, significant dignitaries, to ordinary Egyptians who were lucky and were buried near the capital. Attention is also paid to architecture, from pyramids, through decorated to simple brick tombs.
