Diabetes mellitus is a debilitating complication of the diabetic foot syndrome. Neuropathy and tissue ischemia play important role in pathogenesis, infection significantly worsens the healing process of the ulceration.
The treatment of diabetic ulcerations must be complex, aggressive and targeted at improvement of peripheral circulation (revascularization), offloading of the affected foot, treatment of the infection, wound bed preparation and choice of appropriate wound dressing and correction of metabolic abnormalities.
