Ukraine Thirty Years after Independence: The Struggle Continues

Publication at Faculty of Social Sciences |
2021

Abstract

Ukraine celebrated 30 years of independence in August 2021. The anniversary came at a difficult time when the country faced a long conflict with the Russian Federation, difficult economic conditions, and the COVID-19 crisis.

The problem of Ukrainian sovereignty is often perceived though the narrow lens of occupied Crimea, fighting against the separatist forces in its eastern regions, and the manoeuvres of the Russian army at the Ukrainian border. This chapter focuses on selected long-term parameters that have a major impact on Ukrainian independence, i.e., the effects of a deindustrialised economy, national identity, and its links to religious (church) life.
