This work assesses the use of relative response factors (RRFs) for the quality control of alcoholic products by GC-MS, using two internal standard (IS) methods. A standard IS method using 1-pentanol was compared with an "Ethanol as IS" method.

The stability of RRF values for both methods was tested using standard solutions based on 20, 40, and 96% ethanol-water matrices. Within these three matrices, solutions of the ten most abundant volatile compounds were analyzed at four different concentrations (250, 500, 1000, and 5000 mg L-1 absolute alcohol, AA).

Each solution was measured four times by GC-MS in SIM mode under repeatability conditions. Our results showed that the relative standard deviations of RRFs for all concentrations were found to be 8% for the standard method and 40% for the ethanol method.
