Abstract

In this paper the use of agent-based modeling (ABM) in social sciences is reviewed. The basic concepts of ABM are introduced. Differences to the equation based modeling are described.

Several areas in social sciences can benefit from employing ABM such as theory building, bridging the micro-macro level, unraveling dynamics of systems, in silico experimentation and visualization and communication of results. All these topics are further addressed.

ABM being an interdisciplinary meeting point or incorporation of empirical data into ABM is also discussed. Not only advantages of ABM are presented but also disadvantages and challenging issues yet to be solved are pointed out.
