Abstract
This publication examines the role of interpreting in Kenya in the first two decades of the 21st century. It is the first paper to address interpreting in this particular country and region from a comprehensive perspective, thus taking into account aspects of all relevant areas - not examined separately but rather in an interrelated manner.
These include conference and community interpreting, interpreting training and the essential factors that significantly affect interpreting and the role of the interpreter in local contexts (multicultural and multi-ethnic environments, the role of religion, migration, gender roles, cultural differences, social taboos, etc.). The monograph is based on an examination of academic sources published hitherto on the subject, authentic writings researched in Kenya, and, above all, data obtained from interviews with research respondents such as Kenyan academics as well as active interpreters and translators who have spent working in the country for a long time and are well acquainted with the local conditions.
