Shortness of breath on first contact

2020

Abstract

Shortness of breath is one of the common reasons for visiting a general practitioner or calling an emergency medical service. In addition to a description of the most common causes of dyspnea in adults and children, the book contains physical examination procedures and treatment suggestions according to international guidelines, including basic pharmacotherapy.

The monograph is supplemented by case studies from the practice of a general practitioner and emergency medical services. The reader will get acquainted with the pathophysiology, clinical picture and procedure in patients with asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, laryngitis, heart failure, allergic and anaphylactic reaction, pneumothorax or dyspnea due to metabolic changes.

It is interesting to supplement the monograph with the procedure for sonographic examination of the lungs, which in point-of-care ultrasonography also reaches the primary care environment. Model case reports and an overview of drugs are also useful.
