How to keep students' attention in online learning without losing one's sanity

Abstract

Given the fact that attention is an essential prerequisite for effective teaching, it is advisable for instructors to be aware of this challenge and try to take advantage of the opportunities offered by the online environment to gain and maintain students' attention. The attention retention strategies mentioned in this article represent only a fraction of the possibilities that the online environment offers to address this challenge.

The strategies were chosen given the relative ease of implementation in courses and the wide range of possible uses in different courses. There are certainly many other ways to keep students' attention and make online learning more effective.

Given the indisputable benefits of online learning, we consider it worthwhile to further investigate and refine the ways of sustaining attention by implementing them in the classroom.
