New findings towards the erosional impact and extent of the Labský důl valley paleoglacier in the Krkonoše Mts

Abstract

The Labský důl valley is one of the classical palaeoglaciological sites of the Krkonoše/Karkonosze Mts (the Giant Mts), in which plenty of studies regarding the extent and chronology of Pleistocene glaciers as well as the Holocene vegetation succession, have been conducted. Digital terrain analysis performed in this study revealed that the deepening of the pre-glacial Labe valley caused by a warm-based glacier action reached over 160 m.

During a geomorphological mapping session in 2020, newly-described glacial moraines have been identifi ed, with a signifi cant portion of them located outside of the trough limit of the Labský důl valley. The position of these moraines enabled reconstruction of the paleoglacier thickness, which is about 220 m in the central part of the cirque and 150 m in the central part of the trough valley.

The newly-described moraines could be a valuable subject of study in order to obtain data about glacial retreat chronology and its maximum extent.
