Abstract
Thyroid cancer is rare among human malignancies (<1%), but it is one of the most common endocrine cancers (92%), hidden in approximately 5% of thyroid nodules. Thyroid nodules are very common in the population and, depending on the age of the patients, their overall prevalence is around 20-50%.
Differentiated thyroid carcinoma has a rapidly increasing incidence, the most common histological form being papillary carcinoma (almost 80%). Treatment of the disease requires a multidisciplinary approach, including endocrinology, internal medicine, nuclear medicine, oncology, endocrinological surgery (general or head and neck).
