Abstract
This article describes and contrasts freely available sources of geopositioned toponymic data on the basis of experience from the project "Interlinking language and material culture - a study of European populations in time and place" (2021-2023). In focus are the territories of Bavaria and Schleswig-Holstein in Germany and Volkhovskij rajon in northwestern Russia.
For each dataset, the coverage of the settlements located in the respective regions and the accuracy of their coordinates and name forms for each recorded object is assessed. Of additional interest is the aspect of historical settlements and their degree of inclusion.
The article thus aims to provide helpful insights and recommendations for future endeavors within quantitative toponomastics.
