"Tight moments at the operating room" - allergist s comprehensive approach to perioperative anaphylaxis

Publication |
2022

Abstract

The immediate perioperative anaphylaxis is a rare but serious and even lifethreatening complication of surgeries performed in general or regional anaesthesia. The article describes the diagnostic algorithm of allergy examination, with emphasis on its complexity and necessity of close cooperation with the anaesthesiologist.

It discusses the limits of skin and laboratory tests and outlines the problem of challenge tests with medicines used during the anaesthesia. Regarding the limited number of patients with this diagnosis and the risks and demands of the whole process, diagnostics is performed in specialized centres.

The article shows an overview of patients examined recently for suspected immediate perioperative hypersensitive reaction at our worksite and three case reports are discussed.
