Digitalization and party congresses: a case study of the Czech Republic

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted many areas of human activity, including the political sphere. Political parties had to respond to this situation, especially with restrictions limiting significant actions.

One integral part of intra-party life is party congresses, postponed or started online. The pandemic situation has thus accelerated modernization and digitization trends in this area.

In the first half of 2021, three parties had an online congress in the Czech Republic: Pirates, Greens, and ČSSD. Although they are variously advanced parties in terms of digitization, online congresses have been similar in many ways.
