Dementia is a complex problem for the patient himself, his family and loved ones, and at the same time a great burden on health and social care systems. The prevalence of dementia is markedly age-specific and increases sharply with age: less than one percent of people under the age of 60 have dementia, it is already 1.3% aged 65-69, in the 80-84 age group it is 12 , 1% and for ninety years and older it is already 40.8% (for men 29.7% and for women 44.8%) 1 This age-related increase in the number of patients with dementia is directly and more directly affecting the Czech Republic, because our the population is aging very quickly - by the middle of the century, 10% of people will be over 80 years old.
According to the latest Alzheimer Europe study, about 160,000 people with dementia currently live in our country, and by the middle of the century this number will increase to 290,000, ie twice the number of patients with dementia in 2018.
