Art of classical antiquity gallery - re-installation of the permanent exhibition

Abstract

A representative selection from the Collection of Castings of Ancient Sculpture, which was collected mainly during the 19th century, includes almost a hundred copies of famous monuments of ancient sculpture. Reconstructed statues and sculptural groups of lost or destroyed originals, which can only be seen in this gallery, are unique in the world.

The originals of the vast majority of sculptures are exhibited in major world museums, so the gallery offers the visitor a unique opportunity to admire these works under one roof. The new concept takes into account not only the chronological development of Greek and Roman sculpture, but also presents partial themes, such as the interest in the male body, the emergence of the female nude or the stylization of the Roman aristocracy into a divine form.

The two-nave early Baroque space is dominated by the famous Níké Samothrácká - a monumental winged female figure in a translucent kingdom, pounding against the wind and personifying victory.
