Abstract

This study of the marriages of members and relatives of the Russian royal family focuses on the influence of dynastic relations on Russia's foreign policy in the period 1814-1820 and the importance of dynastic connections with the German states for the consolidation of the foreign policy system of Tsar Alexander I. At the same time, it examines whether the marriages could have had a real political impact and functioned as a supporting pillar of the alliance of the three northern courts or whether they were merely apolitical family relations.

In particular, the Prussian-Russian marriage of 1817, which undoubtedly influenced the direction of Russian foreign policy until 1881, and Russia's relations with Württemberg and Baden were analysed.
