Abstract

Targeted therapy fundamentally changed oncology at the beginning of this millennium, great progress was made in anticancer treatment and essential principals of precision oncology and tumor agnostic therapy was established. Molecular profiling of tumors has become an integral part of oncology to capture a targetable molecular alteration that can be targeted therapeutically.

Three completely tumor-agnostic drugs are currently being registered and it is likely that more will follow. However, despite the fact that this principle is very attractive and promising, we are only at the beginning of the era of precision oncology, and we still have to make our therapeutic decisions based on a correctly determined histological type of tumor.

Because the same molecular alteration in different types of tumors may require different therapeutic approaches.
