Abstract

Early modern discourse often connected plague, famine and war as three punishments of God for human sins. This suggests that history of epidemics cannot be studied outside the religious framework of the time.

This overview suggests variety of contexts in which spirituality and infectious diseases connected with each other during the early modern period. While it was written primarily from historiographic perspective the author believes that it may also be useful for religionists.
