Publication at Faculty of Education |
2022

Abstract

The publication Diorama The Fireflies' Wedding by Jiří Trnka describes the story of the Czechoslovak exhibit created by Jiří Trnka for the World Exhibition in New York in 1939. The first chapter of the book describes the story of the creation of the puppet diorama The Fireflies' Wedding from design to display.

Special attention is paid in the second chapter to the theme of the diorama from the book model. The third and fourth chapters set the work in context, which define the concept of diorama and tell the dramatic political background of the preparations for Czechoslovak participation in the New York World's Fair in 1939.

The next part of the publication is dedicated to the authors of the theme and the diorama, Jan Karafiát and Jiří Trnka. The final part of the book presents the restoration and display of the diorama in the Puppet Museum in Pilsen (a branch of the West Bohemian Museum in Pilsen), including an accompanying educational program.

As a bonus, a chapter on real fireflies in nature is attached.
