Space before space: chora and utopia

Abstract

In her lecture, Lenka Vojtíšková will confront the measurable space of the gallery with the idea of a certain pre-space. She will attempt to problematize the questions of whether the configuration of artworks in the gallery gives rise to their meaning and to what extent their placement generates ways of dealing with them.

She will outline the contours of this pre-space through a reflection on the concept of the chora, with an emphasis on its possible utopian dimension. Does this pre-space function as an active principle, as a gap between things, or as their refuge? In what sense can it be thought of as pre-, how does it behave in relation to the flow of time? And how does it permeate the places in which we move?
