The Making of the Czechoslovak Socialist Working Class

Publication at Faculty of Arts |
2022

Abstract

The paper deals with the preparation of youth for the workforce in Czechoslovakia in the seventies. Taking into account a significant disinterest of young people in manual labor as a profession, the study analyses its causes and investigates how and whether the Communist Party, traditionally based on the support of the working class, was able to secure its political power and reproduction of basic ideological patterns under the so-called "scientific-technical revolution" conditions and in respect to a sharp decline in the social "prestige" of manual labor as a profession.
