Over the past half of century or more, the systems and practices of support for people with disabilities have advanced. The overall focus has been on the shift from institutionalized models to community-based alternatives, and person-centred approaches to planning, funding and support.
This change in the focus of ideology, policy and practice originated in Scandinavia, the UK, North America, followed closely by Australia. Around the new millennium, similar changes began to be seen in other parts of Europe and beyond.
This primarily conceptual chapter considers the development of deinstitutionalization in the Czech Republic from the early 1990s to the present day, with particular attention paid to issues such as choice and control and individual funding.
