Development of mathematical and language literacy through solving word problems of the type: what numbers make sense?

Publication

Abstract

Word problem (WP) of the type: What numbers make sense? comes from a set of textbooks using the Singapore approach. This is an atypical WP where the aim is to fill the given numbers into the text of the WP in such a way that the text makes sense in terms of language, mathematics and real-life contexts.

The interdisciplinary relations are strengthened here by the linguistic aspect of the task. Pupils use mostly heuristic strategies in solving these WPs, which are activated by various aspects.

In the paper, we will focus on comparing the approach to mathematical/real-life contexts and linguistic context when solving this type of problem across age categories (1st to 6th graders).
