Design of an educational game for children with diabetes

Publication

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a term used for a group of diseases that can manifest at different ages. Diabetes mellitus most type I often manifests in early childhood, in contrast to type II which manifests in later adulthood.

Proper compensation of diabetes is essential to prevent any associated complications of the disease. These complications include, for example, diabetic retinopathy, nephropathy or neuropathy.

However, mastering all the tasks that every diabetic addicted to insulin therapy has to undergo on a daily basis is not easy, especially for pediatric diabetics. To facilitate and fix the necessary stereotypes related to diabetes treatment, a mobile game proposal was therefore created, which aims to teach young diabetics how to master the basic rules of the effect of individual foods and insulin on blood sugar levels in a funny way.

The design contains a detailed description of the mobile application, including a description of the individual screens that players display. An essential part is the database of selected foods and their glycemic index and the amount of carbohydrates per 100 g, or per 1 piece.

The game is designed on the principle of endless runner type games, where the "runner" player collects individual foods or insulin units during his trip and his blood sugar increases according to the carbohydrate load. The player's task is to keep the blood glucose in normal range, to display the blood glucose there is a scale at the top of the screen with a slider that shows the current blood glucose value.

First of all we had to map existing games for diabetics and design one that will be unique in this area. In the future, the implementation of another parameter is planned, namely physical activity and, last but not least, testing.
