Paleomagnetic record of the Matuyama-Brunhes reversal from Central European cave sediment

Publication

Abstract

Here we present the results of a magnetostratigraphy study in Za Hajovnou cave sediment from the eastern Czech Republic. Paleomagnetic results from discrete samples indicated that the transition of Matuyama-Brunhes magnetic reversal was within 5.7 cm of the studied sediment profile (~35 cm).

The transition duration was 8.1 +- 0.2 kyr, and the precursor of the reversal occurred 4 +- 0.2 kyr before the transition. Virtual geomagnetic pole (VGP) paths showed the migration of the paleopole between eastern Africa and western North America during the transition.

The rock magnetism results indicated that maghemite is the magnetic carrier of most of the samples. Our estimation showed that the sedimentation rate of the studied section is 0.7 +- 0.2 cm/kyr.
