Abstract

The lecture discusses the progress and the results so far of the project "Ceramics production at the beginning of the Roman Period in Bohemia", the author of which is the researcher funded by GAUK. It is also a part of the dissertation, which the author is working on at the Institute for Archeology of the Faculty of Arts Charles University ("Mlékojedy - Germanic settlements from the beginning of the Roman Period").

The essence of the project is the comparison of typological and chronological knowledge about "germanic" ceramics from the beginning of the Roman Period with the results of chemical and petrographic analyses. They were carried out at the Institute of Geological Sciences of the Faculty of Science MUNI in Brno.

These analyses provide an insight into the technological background of ceramic production at the Mlékojedy site over the course of several generations (50-100 years of the settlement's duration), the sources of material and the method of production (firing). It makes it possible to study the question of possible imports of ceramics (most likely as packaging material for other commodities), the continuity or, on the contrary, the discontinuity of the craft, which is considered domestic production.
