Hypolipidemic therapy in pregnant women with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia

Abstract

Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is an autosomal codominant inherited disorder of lipid metabolism. Its consequence is a lifelong elevation of plasma concentrations of low-density lipoprotein particles (LDL) and the development of premature atherosclerosis.

The period of pregnancy and lactation in women with this disease represents an additional burden due to a combination of physiological changes, pre-existing dyslipidemia and limited therapeutic options and experience. We present to the readers our experience in a series of case reports of six women with homozygous form of familial hypercholesterolemia and their total of 13 pregnancies.
