The importance of technology-based tools used by pupils is growing. Technology-based tools can be particularly beneficial for children with special needs, such as children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD).

Individuals with ASD find technology-based tools attractive because of their visual mode, consistency and predictability, and absence of social interaction cues. There is a growing effort to use technology-based tools for social skills development of children with ASD as they suffer from impairments in social communication and interaction.

Despite the growing interest in using technology-based tools for social skills development of individuals with ASD, little is known about the optimal design and the effectiveness of these tools in practice. The goal of the present study is to draw up a set of recommendations (i.e., to describe 'what works') for the design and use of technology based tools for children with ASD resulting from an iterative process of our tool's development and evaluation.
