Abstract

The poster presenting the topic Between Mainstream and Alternative Educational Systems: Parents' Choice of Alternative Education aims at presenting a research project that will be launched at the end of 2022. It is an empirical investigation that is part of a dissertation in preparation.

The aim of the study is to identify and analyse the motives of parents for choosing a so-called alternative education, with the topic and objective responding to the increasing interest of parents in forms of education that deviate from the mainstream with regard to the aims and means of education. As a result, the number of institutions providing these forms of education is increasing significantly, while the number of pupils being educated in mainstream education is decreasing.

The research investigation will be carried out with regard to the following research questions: Main research question: On the basis of what motives do parents choose mainstream education that would qualify as alternative? Specific research question 1:What life experiences do parents cite as guiding factors in deciding on the choice of alternative education for their children? Specific research question2: In hindsight, how do parents perceive and evaluate their choice? Specific research question 3: In what ways are the life stories of parents whose children are educated in the so-called alternative educational institutions similar? Specific research question 4: How is the curriculum formulated that relate to the forms of education in which the children of the selected parents are educated?
