Mechanical properties of Al and Fe nanocrystalline films

Abstract

Thin nanocrystalline Al and films prepared by DC magnetron sputtering were deformed in situ in the transmission electron microscope in tension. The mechanical properties of these films are shown to be different, in the case of Al films, deformation mechanisms based on grain boundary mechanisms were observed while in Fe film the deformation was realized via dislocation processes.

The experimental results were confirmed by molecular dynamics simulations.
