(Not Only) Life History of a Spanish Nobleman Guillermo Verdugo

Publication at Faculty of Arts |
2022

Abstract

The chapter explores issues related to the creation of a "second life" for important figures from the period in question. As an example, the author focuses on one of Buquoy's peers who has so far been somewhat neglected by both Czech and foreign historians: the Spanish nobleman Guillermo Verdugo.

Although his presence in Central Europe was only temporary, he nevertheless left an indelible mark there. It deals thus with the question of how the image of Guillermo Verdugo was formed in literature and historiography after his death until the 19th century, under the influence of the so-called White Mountain myth.
