Painful forms of peripheral neuropathies

Abstract

Somato-sensory system disorders cause not only sensory deficit, but they are also cause of neuropathic pain. Neuropathic pain occurs in approximately 50 % of peripheral neuropathies.

For diagnostics, characterization a quantification there are used various evaluating scales. In the diagnostics of neuropathies, especially neuropathies associated with small fiber disorders and pain, targeted clinical evaluation, electrodiagnostic methods and prove of small fiber lesions with help of skin biopsy or with corneal confocal microscopy.

Neuropathic pain characterizes most forms of diabetic neuropathy, chemotherapy-induced neuropathy during therapy of tumors, neuropathy associated with vitamin deficiency, autoimmune neuropathies, and transthyretin amyloid neuropathy. Many analgesics, antiepileptics, opioids and locally applied medicaments are used in therapy of neuropathic pain.
