Abstract

Ivana Hay will introduce us the publication she edited, Prague Through the Eyes of the Deaf, which is a collection of photographic, literary and visual artworks by Czech deaf authors who in a unique way captured the beauties of Czech capital city of Prague. Thanks to this collection, hearing readers have the opportunity to become acquainted with the fact about the Deaf community - a linguistic and cultural minority.

It is a great achievement that supports the visibility of artworks by deaf authors. Not only deaf artists but also deaf graduates of the photography course and participants in art workshops held in Czech Union of the Deaf in Prague under the supervision of Ivana Hay contributed to the book.

The book also contains authentic memoirs of 23 deaf witnesses to the period of the Soviet occupation in 1968 (21st August) and the Velvet Revolution in 1989 (17th November), whose centre of events was the capital city of Prague in then Czechoslovakia. Readers can also view the memoirs of these two historical events in Czech sign language after opening the relevant QR codes.
