Abstract
The article informs about Elkonin's method of developing language skills which is based on both a theoretical and a practical point of view. It explains a current, science-based view of literacy and the importance of phonemic awareness in early literacy development.
It also presents the principles of the zone of proximal development and mediated learning, from which the method is based. There is also included a description of the structure of the method and practical information about the operation of the elkonin.cz initiative.
