Abstract
František Listopad devoted himself to literary work in the Czech language throughout his life, from his youth in Prague to the final years of his life in Lisbon. However, as an exiled author, he also wrote in French and especially in Portuguese.
Although he connected the Czech and Portuguese cultural scenes, he separated these two linguistic worlds in his work. He wrote his poetry exclusively in Czech and no translation of his poems appeared in Portugal until 2021.
There were only translations of his essays (Tristan or the Betrayal of the Scholar, in Portuguese, 1960) and prose texts (Chinatown with Rosa, in Portuguese, 2001). Listopad wrote mainly prose in Portuguese, and only one of his short story collections was translated into English (Prose II, Portuguese Prose - Remington, in Czech, 2017).
He was also the author of several translations of poetry (either into his mother tongue or into Portuguese), although he later declared that he had no talent for translation. We will elaborate on the author's relationship to each language and to translation in general.
