The Aporia of Bentham's Ethics

Abstract

The topic of the article is the aporia of Bentham's ethics. I point to the deeper philosophical foundations of Bentham's ethical thought which draw on the materialist and empiricist traditions of the Enlightenment.

I show how these foundations lead to a naturalistic reduction of all normative concepts, and i present the aporetic implications of this reduction with respect to the duality of Bentham's basic ethical principle and his theory of the motivation of human action.
