Socialist Noticeboards and Computer Interfaces as Graphic Screens : Surprising Parallels

Abstract

The presentation focuses on manuals of visual agitation created by architect Josef Dvorský in socialist Czechoslovakia in the 1970s and 1980s. It explores surprising similarities between Dvorský's theories and the concepts of the early GUI, which was developed by Alan Kay in Xerox in the 1970s.

Both authors drew inspiration from the developmental psychology. Although they worked with vastly different medium (analog noticeboard / virtual desktop) the main difference between Dvorský's and Kay's theories stems from the difference of their goals (agitation / interaction).
