Abstract

The book Children's Ophthalmology comprehensively deals with the issues of paediatric ophthalmology. Many paediatric ophthalmologists and experts from other disciplines from leading departments in the Czech Republic and in one case also from Germany participated in the preparation of the book.

The text is divided into 22 chapters. It introduces the reader to the basics of prenatal and postnatal development of the visual system, the most common developmental defects of the eye, genetics in ophthalmology, anaesthesia in paediatric ophthalmology, screening for visual defects, examination procedures in children, refractive errors and contact lenses, refractive surgery, strabismus and amblyopia, prismatic diagnosis and therapy, anterior segment disease, diseases of the orbit, eyelids and lacrimal ducts, lens, glaucoma in children, vitreous and retinal diseases including retinopathy of prematurity, intraocular tumours, as well as basic neuro-ophthalmology and traumatology of the eye.

Included is an interdisciplinary chapter on ocular diseases as seen by other specialists, covering ocular manifestations in avitaminosis, inherited metabolic disorders, dermatological, endocrine, haematological, and infectious diseases, cardiological, neurocutaneous, pulmonary, renal, rheumatological, gastrointestinal, connective tissue and bone diseases, immunopathological conditions, syndromes with ocular manifestations and retinal abnormalities are included. The last chapters deal with the care of the visually impaired, vision the rapy from the perspective of the vision therapist and special educator.

The book is intended for ophthalmologists, aspiring paediatric ophthalmologists, and specialists in other disciplines such as paediatric medicine, neurology, ENT, and others, as well as students. The main contribution of this publication is its comprehensive presentation with rich pictorial documentation.
