Abstract
The article describes the transformation of pre-modern street entertainment into modern circus and variety show culture. In addition to a recapitulation of the general historical framework presented using the example of several selected Central European cities, the text also addresses the theoretical question of the relationship between traditions and modernity.
The study ends with a reconstruction of Barbara Schreier's life, which represents the entire process of change.
