Abstract

Hurricanes are an important part of the Caribbean climate, although they occur less than once in every four years in the most exposed areas. Hurricane winds can be up to ten times stronger than the trade winds that normally blow there.

Most of the damage and casualties are due to subsequent storm surge. Another hazard is precipitation that can last several days if a tropical cyclone's movement is slow.
