The Cecillian movement was a reformatory movement of the Roman Catholic church that spread in the 19th century from Austria to the Czech and German territories. The supporters of the reform criticized the secularization of sacred music and pursued return to Gregorian chant and vocal polyphony.

The treatise looks into the influence of the Enlightment ideals on formulating the requirements of the authentic shape of sacred music. Its statements are documented by period sources.
