Approaching God through Beauty and Art

Publication |
2021

Abstract

Building on the presupposition that the language of the Christian religion is often incomprehensible for contemporary unbelievers, the article searches for ways of talking about God today. It supports the thesis that one of the possibilities is to encounter God through beauty and art.

In addition, it explains how various kinds of art can refer to God and in which ways they are themselves rooted in God's revelation. Firstly, the article discusses the beauty of nature and visual art; then, it proceeds to the theme of music.

Last but not least, it focuses on verbal art, i.e. poetry, narrative, and drama. In conclusion, the papers shows that art enables a person to experience the Triune God - His beauty, truth, and goodness - even before he or she is prepared to accept Christianity on the rational ground.
