The present and the future of Latin as part of ancient heritage in Europe's culture

Abstract

The knowledge of classical languages and together with this also inseparably the understanding of phenomena originating in Ancient times, have been decreasing; life is accelerating and losing its depth. What are our prospects for the future? How long will we still be able to perceive the world around us at a deeper level? What are we losing?

The paper presents a survey of the current situation in the teaching of ancient history and culture and Latin as well as the reception of antiquity and Christianity; at the same time, the author reflects upon the postulates for the survival of this basic, not ellite subject, from the perspective of future primary and secondary school teachers eduaction at the Faculty of Education of Charles University and the preparation of a history textbook for 6th grade students of primary schools.
