Abstract

A review of two recent German books that give an overview of the history of Benedictine monasticism. Dartmann's book focuses only on the medieval period.

Breitenstein's more concise book traces the Benedictines from their beginnings to the present day, and it must be said that it is clearer and may serve better as a basic introduction to the subject.
