Abstract

The chapter deals with the integration of the Russian dynasty into the European dynastic system in the 18th century and is based on the thesis that the dynastic policy of the Russian state corresponded with the efforts of political, cultural and economic integration into European structures. An analysis of the various dynastic alliances demonstrates that they set the stage for the incorporation of Courland into the Russian sphere of influence, encouraged the negotiation of an alliance with Austria, and facilitated the conclusion of peace with Sweden.

On the other hand, efforts to connect with the Mecklenburg and French courts and efforts to promote the restitution of Schleswig to the Holstein-Gottorp dukes and a plan for more permanent peace relations with Sweden proved unsuccessful.
