Societal Aspects of Bilingualism: A Case Study of Linguistic Landscapes in Prague

Publication at Faculty of Education |
2022

Abstract

This lecture introduces briefly Linguistic Landscapes as a discipline investigating visible public signage and a promising field which can provide us with valuable insights into the variety of local linguistic communities and their potential fluidity. The talk focuses on Prague, the capital of an officially monolingual Czech Republic and a famous UNESCO heritage site.

It presents the results of a recent research conducted in two distinct locations of Prague - in the city centre and near the airport. By the end of the talk the results yielded are compared with other small-scale investigations of public signage in Prague.
