Word problems in the Unified Entrance Examination and why not to solve them with equations

Abstract

Word problems appear in the Unified Entrance Examination (UEE) every year. At no level of the UEE test is it required that the word problem be solved by an equation or system of equations.

This requirement is not encountered in the tests prepared by Cermat until the final examination. The aim of this paper is to show that although it is possible to use equations for some problems in the UEE for eight-year grammar schools, it is not necessary.

In this paper, all the word problems from this year's UEE are solved step by step and their solutions are presented, using only simple reasoning.
